Aquarium Fish Outreach & Community Development
Community Outreach Several community visits and workshops have taken place since the project's inception. Community members attended workshops as well as representatives from Iwokrama, the New England Aquarium, the NRI and Project Piaba (Brazil). The purposes were usually to hear the opinion of local persons and to outline a future organizational structure and business plan.
Leaflet / Brochure A leaflet and poster about the project has been created and distributed within the North Rupununi. The aim is to inform local people of the project and more importantly, invite community members to become more involved.
Rupununi Day Project members attended Rupununi Day in the town of Lethem, North Rupununi, during November 2003.
Radio Broadcasts Regular updates of the project proceedings are now broadcasted on the local community-run radio station of the North Rupununi, Radio Paiwomak (see Bina Hill).
OFI Journal A paper about the project has been published in the February 2004 issue of the Ornamental Fisheries International Journal. The paper, describes the steps in which the project takes to achieve a sustainable, community-based aquarium fish business.
