Business Development

In March 2003, after experiencing a funding crisis, Iwokrama went through a metamorphosis, resulting in a stronger focus on business and income generation in addition to its already established research activities. These businesses will be used by the Guyanese and international communities as models of environmental, social, ecological and economic best practices. The foundations for these businesses are cross-sectoral partnerships.

Business Initiatives

Iwokrama has identified timber, training services and ecotourism as the main activities likely to produce significant income to ensure financial security.

Merchandise (apparel, publications, etc.), the provision of consultancy services and a Field Station shop are other developing income generation activities.

Iwokrama is also pursuing the development of Non-timber Forest Products (NTFP's). These include aquarium fish, honey, crabwood oil, and nibbi and kufa (vines for furniture manufacturing).
