Interns/volunteers roles, responsibilities and code of conduct
The Iwokrama International Centre for Rain Forest Conservation and Development is committed to provide a welcoming and safe environment for research, study and learning.
- Interns/Volunteers must comply with applicable Iwokrama policies and procedures.
- No Intern/Volunteer shall bring onto the Iwokrama Centre’s property explosive devices, firearms or other weapons, ammunition, alcoholic beverages, narcotics or objects or materials of any kind which might be used to compromise the security and safety of the Iwokrama Centre. Any attempt to bring such contraband onto Iwokrama property will result in loss of Intern/Volunteer privileges and may result in criminal prosecution.
- All Interns/Volunteers are required to wear at all times an identification badge.
- Treat fellow clients and staff with respect and courtesy. Unsociable behaviour, including harassing clients or staff, is not acceptable.
- The organisation understands that each intern/volunteer is preparing or has entered a profession. As such, all interns/volunteers have an individual responsibility to follow the dress code and any other requirements related to body jewellery, hairstyle and footwear, as is current policy in the organisation (either in Georgetown or the Field Station) in which they have been allocated for experience. When interns/volunteers are allocated to community settings to gain experience, the dress code for the Field Station and Communities are in effect. Footwear should be appropriate for the professional practice being followed and the ongoing safety of the person and others in the working situation.
- Interns/Volunteers must conduct themselves in an exemplary manner at all times. Improper conduct may result in suspension of Intern/Volunteer status.
- Maintain a quiet working environment. Disruptive behaviour and excessive noise are not acceptable.
- Take care of Iwokrama collections, equipment and furniture. Mutilating the Iwokrama Centre’s material through marking, cutting or tampering is not acceptable.
- Ensure the Iwokrama Centre’s material is not hidden or deliberately misplaced.
- Keep valuable items with you at all times. The Iwokrama Centre is not responsible for your personal belongings.
- The intern/volunteer must come to work within the agreed hours of the Project. If there is a need to work on weekends, holidays or after hours, he/she must present the Security officer a written permit issued by his/her immediate supervisor.
- The name of Iwokrama must not be used for personal issues (study or work) without prior consent.
- All products such as photographs, drawings, designs, didactic material, translations or investigations carried out with materials and equipment of Iwokrama during the stay of the intern/volunteer, are property of Iwokrama, and therefore the original must remain at the institution.
- Interns/Volunteers must respect confidentiality requested for specific subjects and information during their initiation.
- Treat fellow clients and staff with respect and courtesy. Unsociable behaviour, including harassing clients or staff, is not acceptable.
- Inform your immediate supervisor promptly of any concerns you have relating to the behaviour of other clients and/or employees.
- Many Iwokrama Interns/Volunteers say their experience abroad with all its challenges and excitement was the most rewarding time of their life. The information and advice that Iwokrama offers are intended as a guideline in each intern/volunteer’s preparation. Interns and Volunteers are responsible for researching and understanding issues that relate to the safety, health, political, cultural and religious conditions in their host country.
