Bird Highlights of Iwokrama

Crimson Topaz

Topaza pella

This beauty is one of 24 species of hummingbirds found in Iwokrama Forest.

With about 450 species recorded so far and an estimated species count of over 500, Iwokrama Forest is a birdwatcher's paradise.  There are higher densities of larger fruit-eating birds, such as cracids, cotingas and parrots, than in other areas of the Guiana Shield or Amazonia.

Hoatzin

Opisthocomus hoazin

Young Hoatzins have wing claws. This unique bird is the national bird of Guyana.

Jabiru Stork

Jabiru Mycteria

One of two stork species recorded in Iwokrama Forest,

the Jabiru may often be seen in seasonal wetlands

along the Iwokrama Road Corridor.
