Sustainable Utilisation Area (SUA)

 

These areas of the Forest are those that are intended for business development purposes. This also includes the Iwokrama Road Corridor.

 

Allowable uses for the SUA are:

Permitted after impact assessment

 

Construction of trails

Permitted after impact assessment

 

Use of motorised vehicles, boats, etc.

Controlled use permitted in accord with area management plan

 

Clearing land for agriculture

Limited to defined community use areas

 

Collection of specimens for scientific research

Permitted after approval of research proposal by Iwokrama Research Committee

 

Timber harvesting, gathering non-timber plant products, hunting, fishing for Amerindian household use

 

Permitted utilising sustainable harvesting methods

Timber harvesting, gathering non-timber plant products, hunting, fishing for commercial purposes

 

Permitted after impact assessment and approval of management plans that ensure sustainability.

Mineral extraction

Possible after impact assessment and approval of management plans that mitigate adverse impacts and ensure post-mining rehabilitation back to forest of acceptable quality and composition

 

Construction of tourist facilities, cabins, towers, canopy walkways

 

Permitted after impact assessment and management planning

 

Campsites

Permitted after impact assessment and management planning
