Edward Glover Appointed Chair of Iwokrama International Board of Trustees

 

Georgetown , Guyana -- Iwokrama International Centre announced today that His Excellency President Bharat Jagdeo and the Rt Hon.Don Mckinnon, Commonwealth Secretary General have agreed to the appointment of Edward Glover as the Fourth Chair of the Iwokrama International Board of Trustees, commencing August 1, 2005.

Mr Glover succeeds Prof Ian Swingland who resigned in December 2003.

 

A former senior career diplomat, Edward Glover was British High Commissioner to Guyana and Ambassador to Suriname from 1998 to 2002. Before that he had diplomatic assignments in Canberra, Washington, Berlin and Brussels in between a range of jobs at the FCO in London.

 

Since his departure from the Diplomatic Service in 2003, Edward has been adviser to the Minister of Foreign Affairs in Iraq on management and planning issues and consultant to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Macedonia on reorganisation. He is an Associate Fellow of the Centre for Caribbean Studies at the University of Warwick and Chairman of the Steering Committee of the Warwick Caribbean Endowment Fund Appeal.

 

He is married to Dame Audrey Glover, an international human rights lawyer."

 

While serving in Guyana Mr Glover demonstrated a keen interest in the country. He referred to Guyana as a “remarkable country, with remarkable assets, and diversity” and during his tenure said that he was “deeply touched by the hospitality and friendship” that he had found.

 

Deputy Secretary General of the Commonwealth, and Acting Chair Winston Cox warmly welcomed the appointment of Mr Glover, recognizing that this was one of the principle issues discussed at the recently concluded 12 th Board meeting of the Board in July 2005.

 

Iwokrama International Centre is an autonomous not-for-profit research and development institution established by Guyana and the Commonwealth. It manages the one million acre Iwokrama Forest in central Guyana to demonstrate how tropical forest biodiversity may be conserved and sustainably utilised for ecological, social and economic benefits.
