Watkins Confirmed as Iwokrama Director General

Dr. Graham Watkins Iwokrama Director General

Graham Watkins, BA, PhD, was confirmed as Iwokrama’s Director General at the 11th meeting of the International Board of Trustees Board in July.

Dr. Watkins, a Guyanese-born UK national, has been the Acting Director General since March 2003, and previously held the position of Iwokrama’s Senior Wildlife Biologist from 1998 to 2003. Dr. Watkins has overseen the dramatic changes at Iwokrama in the last 18 months that have included major budget cuts and staff reductions, as well as greatly increased cost efficiency and accountability.

Iwokrama will benefit from his more than 15 years of natural resource management in tropical South America. This includes working with the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia from 1996 to 1998, when he managed the faunal surveys of the Iwokrama Forest. Dr. Watkins earned his PhD in Ecology and Evolution from the University of Pennsylvania and holds a first degree in Zoology from the University of Oxford.
