Iwokarma Celebrates its 10th Anniversary!

In 1996, the Government of Guyana made good on an offer to the international community by providing the nearly one million acre Iwokrama Forest. At the time the primary focus of the programme was to determine if the Sustainable Utilisation and Management of a relatively intact tropical forest ecosystem was possible.

Today, almost 10 years later, the Iwokrama Rainforest has become one of the most recognised Sustainable Forest Management models in the Caribbean; and has gained worldwide recognition and respect for its work with local communities and the protection of endangered wildlife both within Iwokrama and the North Rupununi Wetlands.

In this 10th Anniversary year, the Centre is proud of its many achievements in forest conservation and management, community relations and our business ventures. More so, however, we are extremely proud of and indebted to those persons who have remained with the Centre from its early years as a project, through financial instability, and, through five Director Generals and Chairmen. The Centre honoured these individuals at two separate events.

An Award Ceremony and Cocktail held at the Cara Lodge Hotel in their honour on June 30th, was attended by those employees who have given the Centre 10-13 years of unbroken service, Friends of Iwokrama, Heads of the Diplomatic Missions, Ministers of Government, HE, President and Prime Minister.
