The Iwokrama International Centre launched a Special Independence Package on May 26th 2006 in celebration of Guyana’s 40th Independence Anniversary and Iwokrama’s 10th Anniversary. This 3 day, 2 night package offers trips to Iwokrama’s Canopy Walkway, Nature Walks, Hiking, Boat Trips and Warm Indigenous Hospitality.

The Canopy Walkway provides an entirely new point of view of the Iwokrama Forest and a better opportunity for visitors experience the rainforest from an amazing perspective – A bird’s eye view from 35m off the forest floor. This is an amazing opportunity for anyone since almost 80% of forest dwellers live in the canopy. Be sure to keep an eye out for epiphytes such as orchids and bromeliads, and look for the amazing parasitic Ficus (the Strangler Fig) as it engulfs another tree.

Boat trips by night offer the chance to see one or more of the four species of caiman in the area including the endangered Black Caiman.  By day, go birdwatching, watch the sunrise on the water, visit the Kurupukari Falls to see the Amerindian petroglyphs; estimated to be 7,000-12,000 years old and the nearby Amerindian Community of Fair View or explore the wonderful nature trails near the Field Station.

A trip to Iwokrama would not be complete without a hike to the 300 metre (950 ft.) summit of Turtle Mountain; the breathtaking view boasts a lush carpet of Emerald Green treetops for as far as the eye can see, majestic mountain ranges cloaked in mist and the mighty Essequibo snaking its way through the forest.

The summit also offers the opportunity to see colourful toucans and several species of monkeys such as the Red Howler, the Black Spider, and the Wedge-capped Capuchin.

Iwokrama offers a unique experience for visitors.  Along with the unparalleled opportunity to view the magnificent rain forest, Iwokrama also offers a subtle educational component to its tourism as its scientific work and staff members form integral parts of your encounters.
