Community Outreach Programme

Iwokrama promotes Healthy Lifestyles

Iwokrama has received a 2 year grant from the Guyana HIV Aids Prevention and Control Project (GAPCP) for our “Healthy Lifestyles” programme, and we are working closely with the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs, Ministry of Health, and the NRDDB to implement this awareness programme about HIV AIDS.

In January this year, we held our first peer education workshop in the North Rupununi with Community Health Workers, members of the Makushi Research Unit and Youth Leaders.  Over 50 people were in attendance of interactive, fun and informative 5 day workshop, and we will be hosting a follow up workshop to this in May.

Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive and participants are suggesting that future outcomes for outreach and educational materials include posters and booklets in both English and Makushi and are enthusiastic about developing radio programming to be broadcast on the local radio station, Radio Paiwomak.

This includes a costume and banner parade, art, poetry, cotton spinning, archery and basket weaving competitions, and social issues the members have requested.

This year’s theme, “Keep an Eye on Our Environment and Care for Nature” was selected by club members and is a direct reference to the Citizen Science monitoring that clubs have been conducting for the past 4 years.
