Amphibian Research

Iwokrama has focused on amphibians through a study that will contribute to the global work of the Declining Amphibians Populations Task Force (DAPTF), which based at the Open University, UK. The study looks at amphibian populations along the Iwokrama Road which traverses the forest in a general north-north-east to south-south-west direction - a transect which normally experiences decreasing average rainfall for locations further south.

The study, entitled, "Anuran communities along a rainfall gradient in the Iwokrama Forest in central Guyana" was conducted by Deokie Arjoon, a Research Assistant in the Wildlife Unit.

As a part of the project, the DAPTF grant provided for 10 University of Guyana Faculty of Natural Sciences undergraduates to attend a seven-week training course in amphibian surveying and monitoring techniques. Some of these students are now working with the Guyana Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) whilst others are completing their final year courses. An additional grant from The Rainforest Alliance supported 14 young people from the communities of the North Rupununi to attend the same training course. The students that attended the course are now part of a larger programme involving Citizen Science approaches to monitoring wildlife in the North Rupununi.
