Black Caiman Research
Iwokrama has focused on population estimates for Black Caiman (Melanosuchus niger; subfamily Alligatoridae) in the Rupununi, Rewa, and Essequibo Rivers in Guyana. Estimated densities and population structure in this study were compared to data from a 1989 survey of caiman in the Rupununi River. In addition, we examined the spatial distribution of caiman in the North Rupununi with the objectives of examining potential breeding areas, people-caiman conflict flash points, and possible harvesting areas. Using these data, we are developing recommendations for the future effective management of this Black Caiman population.
This work is a collaborative effort involving Iwokrama, the North Rupununi District Development Board (NRDDB), and the communities of Fairview, Apoteri, Rewa, and Crash Water. During discussions preceding the study with the communities, community members raised two major Black Caiman management issues:
1.) Community representatives voiced strong interest in the prospects for sustainable harvesting of Black Caiman for generating income.
2.) There were also numerous concerns raised about Black Caiman attacks on hunting dogs and people.
